Emergency evacuation is the transfer of critical patients requiring immediate medical attention to the closest health facility where the treatment is available.
If the patient requires immediate medical care not available at the present health facility, and if immediate care is required to prevent loss of life or leads to permanent disability. In such cases the patient will be evacuated to the closest health facility providing the necessary treatment.
When the treating doctor confirms that the current facility cannot provide the necessary level of care or specialized treatment, the doctor will discuss with the referred facility and send the request to Aasandha (via Vinavi Portal) for approval.
A MEDIF is a form that must be completed by the patient and their doctor if special assistance is required during air travel (e.g., stretcher, oxygen, ventilator, incubator, Wheelchair).
The form must be submitted to the air-line for approval.
It is available from Maldivian website.
A color scan of the MEDIF with doc-tors' signature and hospital stamp will be required.
Once the case is approved, Aasandha team will decide and inform the Transport arrangement to the referring health facility:
Sea transfer: Aasandha coordinates with MNDF for sea ambulance. If unavailable, Aa-sandha will coordinate with Maldives Health Line (MHL) for the transfer of the patient. If both options are unavailable, the health facili-ty will then arrange a private speedboat.
Air transfer: Patients may be transported on a scheduled flight or air ambulance, depending on urgency and medical conditions.
In such cases, a private speed boat can be hired for the transfer of patient through the health facility. The cost of hiring the private boat must be approved by Aasandha Company before travelling. The bill for the private boat hire must be submitted to Aasandha Company by the launch owner.
If the mother is not accompanying the baby, a copy of the mother’s ID card should be kept at the health facility she is admitted at, and the original should be sent with the baby. The application for the baby’s national ID card should be expedited in such cases.
Aasandha will provide one-way ticket for the patient and a person accompanying the patient. If a medical escort is required, Aasandha will cover the two-way ticket for the accompanying doctor or nurse.
If emergency evacuation is by sea, Aasandha will make arrangements for the sea ambulance or Maldives Health Line (MHL).
If both, sea ambulance and Maldives Health Line (MHL) are not available, the health facility will make arrangements for private speed boat hire.
If evacuation is by air, the health facility will make arrangements for airline reservations. Maldivian will forward it to Aasandha for approval.
If the case is approved for air ambulance, Aasandha will collect necessary documents from health facility and forward the documents to Maldives Emergency Medical Services (MEMS) to arrange the transfer.
Depending on the medical documents and MEDIF received, Aasandha team will decide the number of escorts required for the evacuation case and inform the referring facility.
